The short answer

If you want usable, good-looking land that you are not building on right away, forestry mulching is usually the better fit. If you need bare dirt for a foundation, driveway, pond or septic field, you need a dozer or excavator to remove stumps and roots. Many East Texas projects use both: mulch most of the acreage, and fully clear only the build site.

How each method works

Forestry mulchingBulldozer / excavator clearing
What it doesGrinds brush and small trees in placePushes over trees, pulls stumps and roots
What's leftA layer of mulch; stumps at ground levelBare soil plus debris piles
DebrisNone to haul or burnMust be burned, ground or hauled
SoilProtected by mulchExposed; can erode on slopes
Ready to build? No (stumps and mulch remain)Yes, after grading
Relative costUsually lower per acre for brushUsually higher, especially with hauling

When mulching makes the most sense

  • Reclaiming overgrown pasture or hunting land
  • Opening up a wooded lot while keeping big pines and oaks
  • Clearing fence lines, trails and firebreaks
  • When a burn ban is in effect, or burning is not allowed

When you need a dozer

  • House pads, shop or barndominium slabs
  • Driveways and roads that need a solid base
  • Septic drain fields and spray areas
  • Ponds and major grading work

Whichever you choose, ask the contractor exactly what will be left behind, how debris will be handled, and whether stump removal is included. Those three answers explain most of the price difference between quotes. See our cost guide for typical ranges.
